2/22/06 Wesleyan Holiness Consortium Milestones Reached

February 22, 2006

Azusa, CA -- On February 8, 2006 the third and final meeting of the Wesleyan Holiness Study Project (WHSP) concluded with a gathering of pastors in Pomona, California.  The three year project began with the goals of:

  1. articulating a contemporary statement of holiness for the future mission of the Church,
  2. linking denominations with a holiness heritage in re emphasizing the message,
  3. developing a HOLINESS MANIFESTO, and
  4. a published book authored by writers from the participating denominations.

The WHSP was funded and commissioned by the top leaders of ten denominations in North America including:

  • Salvation Army
  • Church of the Nazarene
  • Free Methodist
  • Brethren in Christ
  • Foursquare Gospel
  • International Pentecostal Holiness
  • Church of God (Anderson)
  • Church of God in Christ
  • Shield of Faith
  • Christian & Missionary Alliance

The church leaders provided funds each year and named three scholar/leaders to participate in a two day conversation working toward fulfilling the goals.  Over two dozen major papers were produced by participants in contributing to the unifying effort.  A major outcome was the writing of the HOLINESS MANIFESTO that serves as both a call and statement for unity around this biblical vision for the Church.  (see attached)

In the last two years of the project, regional leaders of the denominations worked in partnership with the WHSP to conduct a Pastors’ Day following the study days.  These events focused on Holiness in the 21st Century.  Primary speakers included Jack Hayford, George Barna, Robert H. Schuller, David Bundy, and Kevin Mannoia.  Much of the time in the Pastors’ Days was given to conversations among pastors focused upon the importance of the holiness message in a changing culture.

The book editing will be complete by the end of summer 2006.  Authors include George McKinney (COGIC), Howard Snyder (Free Methodist), Jack Hayford (Foursquare), James Earl Massey (Church of God), Diane Leclerc (Nazarene), Lisa Dorsey (Shield of Faith), Jonathan Raymond (Salvation Army), Lynn Thrush (Brethren in Christ), Don Thorsen (Free Methodist), among others.
